Update from Northern Ireland-Ireland: The Future North West Conference
Cross border dialogue is critical to the workings of the Irish Anna Lindh Network. So much has happened since the return of shared governance in Northern Ireland in March 2024 this year. One of our members Centre for Cross Border Studies, held a conference in May as part of its 25th anniversary with the North West Tertiary Education Cluster, Atlantic Technological University, Donegal Education and Training Board, North West Regional College and Ulster University. The Conference took place in the Teaching Centre at the University of Ulster Derry~Londonderry Campus and the panel discussions were moderated by Tommie Gorman, former RTE Northern Editor (the national broadcaster organisation in Ireland). Tommie reported on issues related to Northern Ireland including the Peace Process (1993-1998) that brought a cessation of prolonged violence in the region otherwise known as the Troubles.  The programme looked at the future of the North West City Region - for those of you unfamiliar with the geography of Ireland/Northern Ireland this is the region located in the north and north west of the country and is divided by a border. Yet there is a lot of traffic, business, community, educational, health and cultural exchange between these areas as they are closely interlinked through history. The Integrated Education Fund its ‘People, schools and borders’ research report which was commissioned to look at experiences of education and expectations of education provision in border areas.
