Walk the Routes for Peace: Sultans Trail Symposium

Language: English

14–15 November 2025 at the University of Niš – Niš, Serbia

Step onto the path where history meets harmony! The Sultans Trail, proud member of our Dutch Network, together with the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Niš, is inviting researchers, cultural heritage experts, and travel enthusiasts to the Symposium on the Sultans Trail: “Routes for Peace”, taking place on 14–15 November 2025 in Niš, Serbia.

This international event continues the legacy of previous editions in Haarlem (Netherlands) and Ilok (Croatia), gathering voices from across Europe and the Mediterranean to explore how cultural routes can become bridges of peace, dialogue, and shared identity. Chaired by Jan Hoekema, former Dutch Ambassador for International Cultural Cooperation, the symposium will feature contributions from experts representing Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Austria, Romania, Slovenia, and the Netherlands.

Participants will dive into fascinating topics—from the preservation of cultural heritage and religious coexistence in the Ottoman era to the power of slow travel and cultural tourism as tools for peacebuilding. The symposium’s aim is to promote collaboration among European cultural trails and inspire new initiatives connecting history, people, and places.

Those passionate about intercultural dialogue, sustainable travel, and heritage are warmly invited to join this journey toward peace.
