Aequalitas, through the European project REFORE NETWORK – Youth Network for Recovering the Forgotten Remembrance, is implementing in Portugal a set of youth-led initiatives aimed at preserving historical memory and reinforcing democratic values.
REFORE NETWORK brings together young activists from several European countries to reflect on the legacy of authoritarian regimes, resistance movements and the role of remembrance in today’s society. In Portugal, participating young people have been developing concrete actions that connect past and present through creative, non-formal education approaches.
These initiatives include building an inventory of places, people and events linked to historical memory; creating three “memory routes” in Lisbon connecting key sites of dictatorship, resistance and the April Revolution; producing podcasts broadcast on ONDA community radio exploring themes such as dictatorship through young people’s eyes and memory through culture; and running local workshops and actions, including zine-making sessions on antifascism and marginalised voices.
The overall objective is to strengthen young people’s critical reflection and civic participation, while contributing to the prevention of hate speech, disinformation and democratic backsliding. The materials developed are already available and will continue to be shared over the coming weeks.
