Abstract

In this thesis, the focus is on the challenges migrant women face during the integration process. The theoretical part explores the concept of migration, providing definitions and placing them within a legal framework. It identifies and elaborates on the most commonly used factors of integration found in the literature. The role of social work in supporting migrant women is also examined, with particular attention given to the photovoice method, followed by a discussion of ethical dilemmas encountered in working with this population.

The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews and the photovoice method. The participants were migrant women who arrived in Slovenia through family reunification, had been residing in the country for at least one year, and had at least one child. The interviews provided insights into the integration challenges these women face, the factors they find most important, and the influence of family, community, and social networks. The role of social work and the types of support needed during the integration process were also explored.

The findings reveal that migrant women encounter numerous obstacles, including discrimination based on appearance, religion, gender, traditions, or ethnicity; housing segregation; rejection by the local population; difficulties in navigating the city; limited language skills; and financial hardship. Nevertheless, participants highlighted the essential role of social workers in providing support, empowerment, and motivation throughout the integration journey.
