Abstract

This abstract examines the misconceptions about religious Muslims, particularly in the West, where they are often wrongly associated with extremism. The ignorance surrounding the diversity within religions and their shared values fuels these prejudices and fears. The author reflects on their experience attending the Egyptian Moral Rearmament Association (EMRA) conference in November 2019, where Muslims and Christians focused on their commonalities rather than differences, offering a counter-narrative to the prevalent negative media portrayals. The EMRA movement, which has its roots in the Second World War, aims to foster peace and unity across religious divides. The article includes insights from key figures such as Gretel Trog, a Swiss Evangelical Christian, and Dr. Nagia Abdelmoghney Said, an Egyptian Muslim, both longstanding members of Initiatives of Change. Their discussions highlight the importance of personal faith, ethical honesty, and the need for intercultural dialogue. The piece also touches on the evolving views on interfaith marriage in Egypt, providing a nuanced perspective that challenges commonly held assumptions.
